wifi
(Wireless Fidelity) is the popular term for the 802.11b wireless Ethernet standard. Wi-Fi areas, coined to also be known as "hot spots", are generally found in your favorite coffee shops, airports and hotels. Even though WiFi areas sometimes are limited to a smaller radius (typically 100-300 feet indoors and up to 2000 feet outdoors), the speed is significantly faster than using standard EDGE, GPRS, HSDPA or EV-DO cellular access. Noah goes hands on with the HTC Shift in this video, and learns what this CDMA version for the Sprint network can do. This ultramobile PC is a windows touchscreen device that uses Vista, and can run via WiFi or EVDO connection via Sprint. The HTC Shift also offers a Snap View interface which highlights your "day at a glance". Sprint's gone and launched the Palm Treo 800w smartphone, and some of you might even have one already. $249.99 (on contract and after rebates) gets you the latest Palm device with Windows Mobile 6.1 and the first Treo ever to feature onboard WiFi (802.11 b/g). You'll also get EV-DO Rev. A for high-speed data, GPS with Sprint Navigation support, a 2MP camera, Sprint TV, and direct push e-mail.
We'll have one in the offices shortly -... The regional carrier that could, Alltel, announced a partnership with hotspot provider Boingo to add some WiFi to their customers' 3G data diet. $69.98 each month will now get you unlimited handset data via EV-DO along with unlimited access to Boingo Hotspots around the globe.
Alltel's calling the plan the Internet Anywhere Bundle, and it rings up at $10/mo. more than their 3G only Internet plan. I guess it's a decent buy... Boy Genius Report got their mitts on an official internal spec sheet for the upcoming BlackBerry 9000 from RIM, and it looks like the newest BlackBerry might just fix some of the things that still get me about the current crop of Curves and Pearls. In particular, the spec sheet shows a richer Web browsing experience that includes support for AJAX and inline video streaming and a sexy new theme for the OS as a whole.
Perhaps more...
Though the BlackBerry Pearl itself isn't anything new, the T-Mobile 8120 I just unpackaged is worthy of a "New! Just Lauched!" notice, as it brings a few features to the fold that are unavailable on any other Pearl. Most notably, the TMob version rocks WiFi for data access and UMA calling, aka "HotSpot@Home." T-Mobile's got a few HotSpot WiFi phones in its lineup right about now, and the Pearl works as well or better than any... T-Mobile unveiled another HotSpot device today in the RIM BlackBerry 8820. The 8820 looks much like the BlackBerry 8800, which has been available from T-Mob for awhile now, but this latest smartphone adds integrated GPS and WiFI with HotSpot (UMA) compatibility. The 8820 is, in many ways, an alternative to the Curve for business users who can't carry a cameraphone for corporate security reasons.
The 8820 packs a 802.11b/g WiFi... Where there is a will there seems to always be a way when it comes to adding features and applications to the iPhone. Now I have to admit I am a big Howard Stern fan so when I came across this tutorial on how to get Sirius Satellite radio on an iPhone (and iPod Touch) I got pretty excited. Below are the step by step instructions posted by a user named “Skyfreedom” from the website iLounge.com. Now other than configuring your router...
For many of us, 8GB’s is just not enough storage space to handle all of the movies and music we want to have with us all of the time. Thankfully a company called Simplify Media has developed an application that will allow iPhone and iPod Touch users the ability to stream music directly from their pc providing they have a WiFi connection.
Users will be able to browse their entire music library, create play lists and even grant... Since your iPod touch is essentially an iPhone without cellular voice calling capability it seemed only a matter of time before someone was able to create a hack that will allow the user to make and receive voice calls using their WiFi connection. A guy named Marian took the first step when he built a pre-amped microphone to be used with the iPod Touch.
Now according to Erica Sadun at tuaw.com, she reports that an iPod touch modder named... Got a speedy 3G cellphone or USB modem? CradlePoint's PHS300 portable router lets you share your EV-DO data connection with your pals via an 802.11b/g wireless signal. The $180 device runs on either a rechargeable lithium-ion battery or AC power, both of which will power a USB modem or keep your USB-compatible handset charged. A 12v car charger is also available.
The PSH300 supports WEP and WPA encryption and has a built-in...
Jet Blue recently announced they will be adding free in-flight Wifi service on December 11th; albeit with no real internet access other than IM and Yahoo email (without attachments). The good news is that American Airlines and Virgin America both plan to offer a similar service on their Boeing 767-200 planes via a company called AirCell.
Even though no exact pricing information has been released, AA passengers not members of the “Admiral... More wifi articles »What’s Good: Incredible Camera w/Xenon Flash; Full VGA Video Capture; Excellent Web Browser; WiFi; Extendable Operating System; 3.5mm Headphone Jack
