I'm publishing this one as much because I want it to happen as
anything else. I got it from two unrelated sources late last week that
T-Mobile is prepping a version of HTC's Touch HD as their next Android
phone. One of the sources was the ever talkative Anonymous Tipster,
but the other one was somebody with a decent track record when it comes
to accurately leaking info on upcoming handset releases. Neither of
them are... Like the rest of the phone world and half the tech-savvy public in general, I too awaited this past Tuesday's Google/T-Mobile press event with baited breath. Mainly, I wanted to know two things: What would the G1 Android phone cost, both up front and per month, and would the phone look like the one shown in all of those leaked photos or did Google have something sexier up their sleeves. The news Tuesday was both good and bad. ... Google just posted this video of "Google Mobile Products on Android." Pretty cool walk-through of Google Apps running on Android. Check it out if you want to get all hyped up to go mobile with your Google Apps Addiction (not that that's a bad thing):
There's a big ol' comment war going on between Engadget loyalists and TmoNews fans. Sigh. But you don't care. You just want the pics. And the specs. Yeah, me too. MAN, I hope this is a planted hoax. I just really don't get the design here, especially when HTC's other new devices are so cool looking. Maybe I can hack Android onto an unlocked Touch Pro?
Eh, actually, you know me - in two... Doug's live at the T-Mobile G1 with Google launch event in New York and I'm here in California covering the live webstream. Meantime, T-Mo just sent out the press release: The G1 will sell for $179 on a two-year contract:
T-Mobile customers in the U.S. have the opportunity to pre-order the T-Mobile G1, in limited quantities, beginning today at www.T-MobileG1.com and be among the first to experience this game-changing phone. The... Here comes the first Android phone! We're about 14 hours away from the T-Mobile/Google Android phone launch
event and the rumor mill is heating up. Here's a quick rundown of what
may or may not be in store for us when T-Mo and Google take the wraps
off of the first Android-powered mobile phone tomorrow in midtown
Manhattan. Don't forget you can follow all of the action live as it happens on my liveblog page, starting at 10:30 AM ET on Tuesday 9/23.Tricia Duryee of moconews... I'm telling you straight up before I get to the "reporting" that this
is a classic example of me commenting on someone else's story with no
personal first-hand knowledge of the situation. I've yet to use an
Android-powered phone, yet to see the HTC G1, HTC Dream, or any other
Android-based phone in person, and have no idea what's actually going
on behind the scenes. I'm mostly just passing this info and opinion
along to you, so... AOL recently announced they want to throw their hat in the mix by getting into the open source mobile arena with the rest of the big boys. AOL plans on having the platform ready for developers to start tinkering with new apps by this summer. The platform is an XML-based markup language, a mobile device and an application server. Developers will be able to monetize their applications through a number of different advertising methods; clickable... Now that the rest of the world is gearing up for WiMAX, LTE, and other 4G solutions, good ol' T-Mobile is ready to roll out their long awaited 3G network here in the USA. CNET's Kent German reported that he tracked down T-Mobile CEO Hamid Akhavan in Barcelona this week and asked him when the magic switch will finally be flipped. Akhavan "didn't give an exact date but he did promise it would happen by this summer," wrote German.... Oh well at least I was on time :) I just started using Googles SMS search feature and I have to say it has been a life saver.
Between not having a phone that supports Java applications and Verizon over charging for internet access I have been forced to use Goog411 and now the SMS search feature.

More info here http://www.google.com/mob... 411?? I just tried it! It works great..
Just added it to my contacts.
Goocellular - Sign me up! Are you serious goog- 411?? WOW and it's free (minus my airtime usage)
I will have to put that one in my contacts... Google has always created apps and utiliies that are far superior to anything else on the market and they are usually always FREE!!
1-800-GOOG-411 is just another example of a free service that blows away the current 411 iformation request service.'
I agree - it just dosen't make good business sense to try and manufacture a phone from scratch. I don't care what kind of resources they have - It will simply cost them and their shareholders a lot of money.
LG would be a good choice. There is no way Google is going to become a cellular provider. They have to stick with what they do best - New Applications and improving existing ones.
I highly doubt Google is going to bother manufacturing their cell phone. They are going to concentrate on the menu structure, apps and of course speed.
Does anyone know what company they are going to use? LG???
Yeah I think if Google wants to be apart of the cellular industry there is nothing going to stop them (even if they have to create there own carrier).
I'm surprized they haven't bid on the new 700 spectrum [:P]
They have enough money, resources, and brand recongnition to be successful.
Can you imagine Googlewireless??? They would have the coolest phones, apps and cheap rates. Hmmm it makes me think that once Google gets their hands into cell phones there is going to be no turning back. I really like the way Google does business and seems to really think things through when creating new products and services, but I just hope I won't have to click or listen to an advertisement before I am able to access my email.. [:(]
I think mtajim has a point. Google wants all of the info biz. More google phone threads »what`s the retail price of htc T1-mobile G1. What are the main differences between the Iphone and the G1???
