Web browsing on the go has definitely improved, thanks to the efforts of Apple and Android. But what's the point of having the huge beautiful screens of the iPhone and G1 when there's no 3G or Wifi access? I guess one could be patient, waiting for the Internet to show up via the pokey slow cell-phone network. Of course that's as much fun as watching paint dry.
No thanks. When it comes to basic info, I rely on Google SMS. Just by texting GOOGLE... Hey, lookie here (that's my phrase du jour, apparently) ... It's the Google Android phone being demo'd live on video. The branding was covered over and the video is shot from across a big ballroom, but there it is. And it looks pretty slick. At CTIA last week I kept hearing two things about the HTC Dream Android phone that's supposedly coming out on T-Mobile USA very soon:1. "It's buggy as Hell but still really awesome."2. "It'll be launched... I'm telling you straight up before I get to the "reporting" that this
is a classic example of me commenting on someone else's story with no
personal first-hand knowledge of the situation. I've yet to use an
Android-powered phone, yet to see the HTC G1, HTC Dream, or any other
Android-based phone in person, and have no idea what's actually going
on behind the scenes. I'm mostly just passing this info and opinion
along to you, so...
The HTC Dream has received FCC approval, and that quiet rumbling you hear is the sound of T-Mobile subscribers doing their happy dance across the land. HTC model "DREA100" is ready to go and appears to pack the following goodies along with its much-ballyhooed Android operating system:
T-Mobile ready 3G: GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/1900 and WCDMA 1700 bands
802.11 b/g WiFi
Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
A BlackBerry-esque jog ball
T-Mobile's... A new version of Google Talk is now available for the iPhone and iPod Touch browsers to let users not only communicate via Gmail but also keep in touch with quick bits via Talk.
Users need to use Safari on iPhone to get to Google Talk. When you navigate away from the page on your web browser, status is set to unavailable, and the session restarts when you return. So, it’s not as integrated as a downloadable app, but it’ll do for a quick fix.... The Google Maps for mobile team announced that you can now speak your query instead of typing it on a certain BlackBerry devices (Pearl 8110, 8120, and 8130, US only). Using the same speech recognition engine as GOOG-411, the free directory assistance service, Voice Search for Google Maps is great in situations when you can text…like while driving in California as of this week.
Phone Magazine by way of Android Community has posted video and a ton of pictures of the latest build of Google's Android mobile phone OS as demoed at the Google I/O conference today in San Francisco. Thanks to the magic of YouTube, you don't even have to click away to watch the first vid - check it out after the jump. One quick note before the vid. Engadget Mobile's Joshua Topolsky claims the device in the demo video is, in fact, the... Consider this a mini-review and professional "thumbs up" for Google's GMail Mobile. I've recently begun the process of moving all of my Email over from a custom domain to a couple of Gmail accounts, and as such have started accessing Google's mail system from the handsets I've been reviewing over the past few weeks. I gotta say that Google's getting it right.
First, I used an iPhone to pull down my GMail messages via POP3. ... With HTC planning a big media event for May 6th and Summer just around the corner after that, you'd have to think we'll being seeing the first Android phone before too long, right? For those who can't wait here's a video clip to tide you over: Boy Genius Report found (via WM Experts) this semi-watchable video of Android running on an HTC TyTN II smartphone.
What makes this extra-interesting is that the android install isn't replacing...
A few weeks ago I reported on increased talk about Nokia's N95 - that do it all 5MP Camera, GPS & WiFi uberphone - making its way to AT&T here in the US before too long. That was just the latest in a chain of related rumors dating back to last summer, but it did seem to have some legs. Well, chalk another one up for those legs (or for an unfortunate error on AT&T or Google's part).
I Googled "Nokia N95" while... AOL recently announced they want to throw their hat in the mix by getting into the open source mobile arena with the rest of the big boys. AOL plans on having the platform ready for developers to start tinkering with new apps by this summer. The platform is an XML-based markup language, a mobile device and an application server. Developers will be able to monetize their applications through a number of different advertising methods; clickable... Now that the rest of the world is gearing up for WiMAX, LTE, and other 4G solutions, good ol' T-Mobile is ready to roll out their long awaited 3G network here in the USA. CNET's Kent German reported that he tracked down T-Mobile CEO Hamid Akhavan in Barcelona this week and asked him when the magic switch will finally be flipped. Akhavan "didn't give an exact date but he did promise it would happen by this summer," wrote German.... CrunchGear picked up on a Marketing Week story pointing towards a possible Google-Dell joint announcement at 3GSM in Barcelona next month. I blogged last month about a possible Dell smartphone being in the works, and Google has of course announced their Android mobile operating system, so this alleged partnership is worth keeping an eye out for, at the least.
Dell could, of course, simply be readying an Android-powered device that's... Google's Software Development Kit for Anrdoid - their Linux-based phone operating system - has been in developers' hands for more than a month now. So what's the word on the street? According to Ars Technica's Ryan Paul, it's not all that great. Apparently, developers are pretty hamstrung not only by bugs - which is to be expected - but by the lack of a QA system good enough to aid bug-tracking and other critical elements of... Japanese cellular operator Willcom has successfully demonstrated the Google-backed Android mobile OS running on a reference board (a circuit board mimicking handset functionality). Willcom's demo shows Android's multi-tasking functionality by receiving a call while browsing Google Maps, and gives hungry geeks just a bit more to drool over while pondering the future impact of Google's Open Handset Alliance and the Android platform.
For... MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (November 30, 2007) – Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) announced today that it will apply to participate in the Federal Communications Commission's upcoming auction of wireless spectrum in the 700 megahertz (MHz) band.
As part of the nationally mandated transition to digital television, the 700 MHz spectrum auction -- which begins January 24, 2008 -- will free up spectrum airwaves for more efficient wireless Internet service for... Google announced today that is will file a formal application on Monday, December 3rd (deadline is Dec 5) to participate in the 700MHz spectrum auction which begins January 24, 2008. Google will be bidding on a portion of the spectrum that has become known as the “C Block”. This portion of the spectrum is unique in the fact it will require the winner to provide their customers with the freedom to choose which device and software... Google’s new service dubbed “My Location” utilizes cell phone towers to triangulate the users position rather than relying on a GPS receiver. This is good news for those consumers who do not have a GPS enabled phone or do not wish to pay extra for navigation services offered by the carriers (although I do have to admit I love my VZNavigator).
Like Goog411, “My Location” will be offered for free to the masses and will include advertisements... A press release showed up in my INBOX 45 minutes or so ago announcing the Open Handset Alliance and Android, "the first truly open and comprehensive for mobile devices." The email also invited me to a conference call featuring a who's who of mobile industry heavyweights from Google, Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile's parent company), HTC, Qualcomm, and Motorola.
I'm on hold waiting to get into the call as I write this just after 9am Pacific...
Okay, so a few press releases, a giant conference call, and an afternoon's worth of reporting and blogging later, here's what I can tell you about the Gphone. There is no Gphone, but there will be dozens of Gphones. Google is releasing a mobile phone platform called Android, and has partnered with a few dozen handset and chip/parts makers, carriers, and others to form the Open Handset Alliance, which is seemingly going to do some... Valleywag.com is reporting that Google will be announcing T-Mobile as their first cellular partner, and that said announcement could be coming next week. (Remember, I quoted USA Today about Google and TMob at the beginning of the week?) But they're also saying most folks will be disappointed by the announcement, as it will feature neither an actual piece of hardware nor even a true mobile operating system from the search giant.... The Wall Street Journal is reporting that an announcement from Google regarding their plans to enter the cellular phone market will be coming in the next two weeks. Amol Sharma writes in the October 30th edition of the paper that Google has been in talks with manufacturers and carriers about releasing handsets built around Google-made software designed to their Web-based services and applications to mobile users. Sharma reports that... The more we seem to know about Google's maiden voyage into the cellular space, the less it seems we know. First it was a smartphone and a network, then just a smartphone, then a bunch of smartphones, then a "mere" smartphone operating system to be licensed out ... And now the latest is that the gPhone is once an again an actual phone. But a non-smartphone. But a non-smartphone with a special "gButton."
Confused?
USA Today... There's so much going on in the cellular industry right now, it's high time for a Top 5 list that's about more than handsets alone. Don't worry, there's some hot handset action here for you. But I'm also running down some trends and news to keep an eye on, as it's usually the behind-the-scenes stuff that really determines what your new cell phone will look and act like.
1. WiMaxSprint's ultra-aggressive plan to rollout their... Google's hedging their bets when it comes to the mobile phone space, and why shouldn't they? First it was reported that the much-hyped gPhone is probably "just" a Google OS for mobiles, and not an actual Google-branded handset. I'm actually not all that disappointed by the news, and it makes sense given Google's platform sorta-neutral way of doing things. A gPhone OS that could be installed on many a branded, locked, or...
