LG enV2 Review - Design & Features
Design & FeaturesEditor Rating: EnV2 is smaller and more squared-off looking than EnV. At 16.5mm thick it’s still not a small phone, but it’s much more pocketable than its predecessors. And LG managed to keep just about everything that made EnV so good and also give EnV2 a slightly larger internal display than EnV had. The one design choice found here that’s inspired some controversy amongst has to do with EnV2’s external keypad and display. Compared to The V and EnV, EnV2’s front panel has much larger buttons but a smaller display and only Up and Down arrow keys instead of a full D-Pad. The result is slightly more limited functionality — most notably, you can’t scroll left/right when composing a text message with the phone closed — but one of the easiest to use dialing keypads you’ll find on any phone anywhere. Of course those giant, easy-to-press buttons do give the handset the look of a very old school calculator, for better or for worse.
The handset looks and works like a candybar phone when its closed, and also opens the long way to reveal a “mini-laptop” configuration with a large internal display on the top and a full QWERTY thumbboard on the bottom. Stereo speakers flank the display and the keyboard features a five-way D-Pad as well as two softkeys and a couple of shortcut buttons. For some reason EnV2 has two Space keys positioned in the bottom left and right corners of the QWERTY layout; I much prefer a single, larger space bar placed bottom center as on a traditional computer keyboard. Still, LG/VZW did a nice job of giving the handset a more compact design and feel while still retaining great usability. I liked that the top panel of the flip locks into place at a 90-degree angle relative to the keyboard but also can be pushed further back to a near flat orientation. EnV2 is slated as a “VCAST Messaging Phone” and as such features a fairly robust messaging and multimedia feature set, though you’ll have to pay extra for the Mobile Email client. The Email program actually isn’t very good - it’s easy to set up but can’t handle attachments or even display HTML links inside of messages. There’s a pre-installed Mobile IM client works with AIM, Yahoo!, and Windows Messenger but not GTalk, and Verizon’s “Mobile Web” WAP browser can get you to mobile-ready sites but not out to the real Web. For that you’ll need an HTML browser like those found on Voyager and Glyde. And there’s no easy PC syncing or other smartphone features to be found here; EnV2 isn’t a smartphone, it’s a messaging phone, and it’s built for talking and texting. The VCAST media player supports connections to Verizon’s music store and streaming video selection, both of which are pay services, and also lets you sideload music from your computer onto a microSD card for use on the handset. Most popular music formats save tracks bought at the iTunes store (protected AAC) played back without any problems on my review model, and VCAST video clips looked pretty good on the QVGA internal display, though they pixelated when blown up to full screen mode. EnV2 is also compatible with games, ringtones, and other goodies available for purchase through VZW’s “Get it Now” menus. I downloaded the VZ Navigator application, and it worked quite well in conjunction with the phone’s onboard GPS chip. Friday, December 26, 2008I just got the phone yesterday and have been playing with it pretty much non-stop. I had the original EnV for about a year and loved it for the most part until it had some internal issues come up...I believe it was just due to the age and the wear and tear it experienced. I will never go back to a non-QWERTY phone ever again. I'm hooked and I can't see how we even lived without it before. I think the phone looks great, much smaller and more convenient. The features are all nice and while the external screen may be small, it's not hard to read so I don't know why there's so much complaint about it.
The only thing I'm not too crazy about is the fact that there aren't many features different then the original. It's more of a cosmetic upgrade than an internal one. Still, it's a nice phone and I'm pretty happy. Thursday, December 25, 2008thanks for the env 2 by lg its nice to no a little i might get one in feb. thans sincerly i am a fan of ur web site Thursday, December 25, 2008this phone is actually a very bad phone. my sister has had it for several months now and she cant wait to get rid of it... The phone has really bad service and the sivler paint on the outside scratches off easily. I would prefer you to get a cover for this phone immediately. I also despise the phone because of the small screen it has in the front. Its so annoying. I hate texting with it. I dont know how my sister bares it... I'm more of the big-heavy-phone type person... Monday, December 22, 2008can you set ringtones as text message alerts? Monday, December 22, 2008i got this phone and it rocks! Sunday, December 21, 2008dude it isn't a girly phone. it would be girly if it was pink or glittery. have a little more confidence in yourself, i'm a dude and i'm getting it. Sunday, December 21, 2008Noah, do you think this phone is a little to girly for guys, or do you think it's a cool phone for a guy to have? I told one of my friends that I might get the phone because I thought it looked cool, but he said that it was more of a girl phone than a guy phone! Now I'm asking you for your personal opinion on that question? Please tell me! Saturday, December 20, 2008whats goin on guys i would like u to make a video of
the lg en-v 2s gameing and music and all it can do? bye. Tuesday, December 16, 2008also, this is my first phone so i hope (if i get it) i really enjoy it. the keyboard looks pretty easy to use. Tuesday, December 16, 2008im planning on getting this phone for christmas. i just hope it doesn't get "out-dated" fast because i have a two year contract with it. i just want to know if it is worth the money i have to pay? it seems like a wonderful phone and i love the way it looks. im probably going to get it in black, maroon looks nice, too. Tuesday, December 16, 2008my biggest problem with this phone is the speakers. why put two on the inside of the phone when there isn't one on the outside. so when the phone is closed, the sound is muffled and harder to hear in my pocket, even on the highest sound level. the first "notch" when the phone opens is angled really ueslessly also. but other than those gripes, it's a pretty sweet phone. Monday, December 15, 2008This phone is awesome! Guys if you love you have big hands and love to text this is for you! This phone is beautiful, solid, fun, and lol the camera is fun and overall you will love it! Monday, December 15, 2008Wow! This phone is awesome and i love it so much! Guys if you have big hands and love to text this baby is for you! It is solid, beautiful, eye catching, and will not disappoint you! Thursday, December 11, 2008I've had 6 replacments of this phone. It's an amazing phone... when it works. The silver on the front of it comes off really easily. Also, the place where it charges breaks a lot. I loved the phone, but i switched to the Voyager because i got fed up with all the problems mine had. All in all though, it's a pretty good phone. Amazing for texting, and the front of the phone is actually entirely easy to use. Thursday, December 04, 2008This phone is great. It's a perfect phone for those who want to call and text, and not too much else. If you don't need the best e-mail client or a full browser, this is it. It doesn't have the problems the voyager has. It's not too big. I love this phone.
Do to a verizon store and look at it so you can see what the size is.
Also, buy it from letstalk.com. It's usually free, or sometimes $50 with a $50 mail in rebate. Much cheaper than buying it from verizon. Monday, December 01, 2008this phone is really good i like it alot the front screen might be a little to small but thats ok..the front keys are good to txt on as well..i have madden 08 on mine and it runs perfectly fine it does freeze or anything and the sound quality is pretty good but i love qwerty keyboard and overall this phone is amazing for heavy texters and stuff..so get this phone its hella tight Sunday, November 30, 2008I am thinkin about gettin the env2.
