LG Dare Review - At a Glance
At a GlanceEditor Rating: What’s Not Good: “Full HTML” Web browser is mildly disappointing; Touchscreen can take a bit of getting used to; No VCAST TV support Bottom Line: Dare is the best multimedia phone Verizon currently offers and the best cameraphone they’ve ever offered. It may well be the best cameraphone available from any US carrier right now, as well. Though the touchscreen is smaller than those of its competitors (iPhone, Instinct, and Vu come to mind), it’s bright, clear, and relatively responsive. If you don’t need QWERTY or VCAST TV, Dare is the best feature phone on VZW, and arguably the best media-rich handset currently available on a US carrier. All you need to protect any touch screen are the static cling protectors available at office supply stores. Because universal PDA pouches fit the Dare I was able to get one on clearance for $6!! That's all the protection you need. Any new phone takes a bit of getting used to as far as texting is concerned, but I've had absolutely no problem with texting using either the DTMF or Qwerty keyboards. You can still download all your favorite stuff; you just use the media center instead of Get it Now! No biggie. As for reception, mine is awesome!! Sunday, August 10, 2008Yah it's cool in all but there's one thing that sets these touch screen phones from reaching perfection...a glass touch screen. The pressure sensitive screens get scratched waaay too easily, ruining the phone. Only apple has made a touch screen that has true quality, so the iPod Touch and iPhone remain the victors in touch screen devices. Thursday, August 07, 2008I've had the Dare for just over a week and I LOVE it!! I have gone thru the Blackberry Curve, the instinct and the Voyager before settling on this phone. The keyboard is taking some getting used but I have had that problem with pretty much every touch screen I have used. LG's are super easy to navigate and so far have had absolutely no problems with reception. All I can say is LOVE IT!!! Thursday, August 07, 2008daniel w is obviously speaking out of his rear end, as the iphone's landscape qwerty is only available while doing web-browsing and other features, NOT while texting. Wednesday, August 06, 2008i had the Q9m which had the best keyboard and then the phone had 1000 problems so i got the LG dareand its texting is annoying and when your in the car its even harder to text....but its good...but i am really want the palm centro because not having a real keyboard is killing me!!!! Wednesday, August 06, 2008I've been keeping on phones more recently after having hit-and-miss call quality with a Samsung Alias I had. It was a decent phone, but I felt it was full of nothing but compromises. It compromised a good phone keypad with legible buttons with TINY ones for entering phone numbers. There was a similar issue when texting, too. So, I recently tried the enV2. It was an okay phone and I had call quality issues on my end. It wasn't what I was expecting, so I took it back and currently have the Voyager and I'm on the waiting list for a Dare. So far (until Rhapsody is available for the Voyager) the music player is limited and limiting in many ways. I'd LOVE to have a phone to replace my iPod, but the Voyager seems a bit big for that task. Having used the Voyager's grandfather, the VX9800, I was already familiar with the keyboard. It is a GREAT addition as I both text and do e-mail while at work. My company machine's won't let me do my e-mail, so the Voyager is a godsend for that. I want to get the Dare, as it is smaller, but the Voyager is the closest to an all-in-one available. Because of the screens, It reminds of a partially inverted Nintendo DS. The Dare's design hearkens back to the OLD Palm PDAs, with a size similar to the old Vx series of handhelds. It matters what you need and as much as I'd LOVE to have the Dare, if you really do text or e-mail (or need to easily and quickly check your e-mail) I'd say get the Voyager. But, if the camera and the multimedia is a priority, I'd say take the Dare. Tuesday, August 05, 2008well if your a texter, iphone has a virtual qwerty keyboard if you turn it sideways. id choose the iphone anyway because it has the appstore the "installer.app", an ipod, a bigger screen, and a full internet browser that looks just as it would on a mac or pc. Saturday, August 02, 2008I love the look of the dare and have seen many reviews. I am very interested in getting this phone but i am afraid of texting with a touch screen. I am a HUGE texter and would be so sad if texting on the dare seemed impossible. Many people that give the reviews do say that it takes time getting use to but i'm still unsure. Has anyone run into any texting problems? Plz help:( Wednesday, July 30, 2008I've had the DARE for about 2 weeks and so far i am very happy with it. I had a Treo 700P which was a great PDA but not a great phone, also very boring. The touch screen on the DARE took some getting used to. At first i would press the wrong keys when swiping or scrolling. Now it works perfect every time. I LOVE the size! Wednesday, July 30, 2008i had the dare when it first came out for 3 weeks it was nothing but trouble and froze all the time. it was hard to text on and you really need a palm pen for it and it didn't come with one it ended up costing me a tone of money to get stuff from keeping the phone from getting damaged. and some times it would randomly turn off on me. idk i hated this phone. i took it back with verizons 30 day guaranty and i got the voyager and i couldn't be happier. the dare was nice and every thing great look and style but hard to operate and time consuming. when i text i want it done fast but with the tough it just took to long i needed a key pad lol Sunday, July 27, 2008Danie -- enV2 looks "sturdy", how did you break 2? I ask b/c hubby wants enV2 & he is rough on phones. I'm torn b/twn Dare & Voyager Sunday, July 27, 2008LG Dare or Voyager? I don't normally text a lot but plan to do so now that I will have a QWERTY keyboard. Dare is smaller which I like but am afraid that the keyboard is not as user friendly. of course all of the other features are a bonus..... I already use the navigator and depend on it (although it's not always accurate =). Is the Voyager hardware going to be upgraded or is it just a software fix? Sunday, July 27, 2008I bought the Dare two weeks ago, and am going to return it for a different phone. My family and clients began complaining immediately that I was breaking up continually. One client refused to talk to me until I got to a land line. The email feature is great, but that is the only other feature I use other than the "phone" feature. Again, as a phone, it's a zero and great disappointment. I would not use keep this phone if it was free, let alone for the $250 they charged for it -- $99 after rebates and the t20-year renewal bonus. Saturday, July 26, 2008Hey guys!
Ok, I hope you will support me on wat to choose, the dare or the Samsung Glide. Plz Plz Plz help me!! I hear the texting is hard on the dare but not sure soo help plz!! Saturday, July 26, 2008I love everything about the LG Dare, especially with the rhapsody music feature. And even with it's tricky and aggravating touch screen and just ok internet browser, it fails the test for me and many others, because, as with all LG phones, it will not work in many Verizon Wireless areas where all other phones work fine...but NO LG phones can send clear signals from those areas...Tech support at both LG and Verizon were friendly and very helpful, but as of yet, there are no solutions in site...It is with very sad countenance that I have to return my Dare and look for another non-LG phone...If you do not live in a non-LG area and can train your fingers, (maybe grow some fingernails), to use the touch screen, definitely go for the DARE...It's a really good looking and feel good phone with excellent, well working features. Saturday, July 26, 2008I'm getting this phone on sunday!!!!!!!!! Friday, July 25, 2008I got the Dare, now I'm returning it. I've been using the LG XL8300 and it's tough getting use to all that fancy stuff. That touch screen is.. well..touchy. And what's with the new "get it now" menu? I liked it the way was. The "Media Center" doesn't have the same menu items like, "Get Going" where you can download your favorite weather application. Thursday, July 24, 2008Ive got the Lg enV rite now. im on my second one... i busted the screens on both of them. i need a new phone and am debating on this one. I really like the features but i'm worried about the switch from a full hardware keyboard to touchscreen. in my opinion the glyde is too small of a touchscreen for me and the voyager; well all my friends that have it hate it. ive been looking at expert opinions and evryone elses. i just can't decide if i should spend 250$ on it or not. Wednesday, July 23, 2008CAN THIS PHONE GET AIM AND IS IT FREE AND CAN U USE MYSPACE OR YOUTUBE? Wednesday, July 23, 2008Kathy T
Get the Dare, I have it and it is a wonderful phone and easy to use. I am not a fan of the glide and even a verizon rep steered me away from the glyde. I was lamenting over the iphone vs verizon phone and chose the Dare for its navigation feature which I feel is much better than the iphone application. Good luck in your choice. |
