Samsung Instinct-M800

User rating 4.8   Read reviews - Add review
The Samsung Instinct M800 features a large 3.1" display with a haptec touch screen and virtual QWERTY keyboard. Other key features include a 2.0 megapixel camera, GPS, EV-DO Rev. A data, 2GB microSD card included, full HTML browser, stereo Bluetooth and streaming music and TVcapability.
What’s Good: Supports every feature Sprint offers; EV-DO Rev. A data speeds; Good touchscreen response; Bright, clear display; Excellent GPS/navigation and voice command features; Good visual voicemail feature; 3.5mm headphone jack and stereo Bluetooth; Second battery included in packaging; Excellent value at $129 retail price

What’s Not Good: “Full HTML” Web browser is disappointing; No IM support; No calendar synching; No support for user-created ringtones or background images on menu screens; No phone as modem support on mandatory Simply Everything plan

Bottom Line: Sprint’s new flagship media phone is a very good device, even if I wish they’d skipped the whole “Instinct vs iPhone” marketing campaign.  The Web browser needs work and mobile IM addicts will be left in the cold by Instinct, but otherwise Instinct offers solid support across a huge variety of features and excellent implementation of GPS-based navigation and voice activated commands in particular.  Though plans start at a hefty $70/mo, if you use the unlimited data, navigation, and Sprint TV it’s actually a good value.  And you can’t beat the $129 price tag.

Tuesday, July 08, 2008Most videos showing web browsing on the Instinct have pointed out that Opera 4.1 (a much better browser than the built-in Samsung browser) won't run on the Instinct. Viewers will want to know that plans are underway by Sprint itself to fix the problem, probably within a month. http://instinctbookmarks.blogspot.com/ is following the issue very closely. Here's a posting off Sprint's own developer forum: "nathan_sprint_adp Subject:re: MIDP UI support on Instinct Date:2008-07-08 at 11:20 AM CDT Want to update a posting we made yesterday - there ARE plans to provide a JVM that will support LCDUI so most of the MIDP 2.0 apps (opera mini, google maps, etc) will port to run on the instinct. The plans are to make this an OTA upgrade (so users don't have to go to the store for a software reflash) - Timelines are TBD based on when we can get this implemented, certified and ready to deploy (our hope is within a month - but trust us, we understand the urgency and appreciate all the feedback/posts) thanks, Sprint ADP "
