Now that the rest of the world is gearing up for WiMAX, LTE, and other 4G solutions, good ol' T-Mobile is ready to roll out their long awaited 3G network here in the USA.  CNET's Kent German reported that he tracked down T-Mobile CEO Hamid Akhavan in Barcelona this week and asked him when the magic switch will finally be flipped.  Akhavan "didn't give an exact date but he did promise it would happen by this summer," wrote German.

Wow.  That's almost a launch window!

German goes on to say that T-Mob's head honcho told him his company will soon have "the best" 3G network in the States, and that rollout will start in major metro areas.  T-Mobile USA's Peter Dobrow then corroborated his boss's claims, saying that 3G in the USA was a go for the first half of this year.

Why the long wait?  Blame Uncle Sam.  Apparently T-Mob's had all kinds of problems getting the government to sign off on the upgrade and rollout.

Meanwile, Akhavan also said that T-Mobile will be launching an Android device of some sort in the fourth quarter of this year.  But he wouldn't say which device or what part of the world it will launch in.

Kent's post also details a few more interesting bits about T-Mobile's European operations and handset selection.  Check it out over on Crave from here

Monday, March 03, 2008Our friends in parts of Asia and Europe have been enjoying "3G" high-speed cellular services for some time now, while true 3G networks are still ramping up to speed stateside.  One use of 3G cellular networks has been for video services including streaming entertainment and video calling (many 3G phones actually have two cameras: a high quality shooter on the back, and a lower-res camera on the front for video calling).

Verizon and Sprint have been offering streaming video content for awhile now, while Cingular more recently launched its Cingular Video service over its 3G HSDPA network.  Carrier-independent companies such as Slingmedia and MobiTV also offer streaming video hardware and services that can be accessed by smartphones via cellular and Wi-Fi connections.  Just today I read a blog post about a possible deal between Verizon and Web sensation YouTube to bring all sorts of amateur video programming to Verizon's VCast wireless network.
