Wal-Phone: $99 4GB iPhone Rumored for Wal-Mart

This isn't so outlandish of an idea, but I'll believe it when I see it.The hot Rumor du Jour has a 4GB Apple iPhone headed to uber-discount store Wal-Mart at the low, low cost of $99 with a two-year contract.  99 bones is less than you'll wind up forking over to AT&T for that first month's bill once you figure in the iPhone data plan and activation fee, never mind all of those mysterious taxes that show up cell phone bills.Boy Genius...

Mini-Review: Nokia Email Beta needs some work

Thanks to the folks at Nokia, I've got a re-loan of the E71 smartphone, one of my favorite releases of 2008.  A Symbian S60 device, the E71 has an Email client as part of its pre-loaded Messaging application, and while it can't handle HTML mail and isn't the prettiest thing to look at, it basically works just fine. However, Nokia just announced the live Beta of their new Nokia Email service for select devices - including the E71.  So I...

Digital Trails: Your money or your privacy?

Last Sunday's NYTimes featured an article about a group of MIT students who've traded their privacy for free smartphones.  Researchers are tracking the every move of 100 or so students as part of a study on "collective intelligence," or what the article describes as:a vast sea of digital information being recorded by an ever thicker web of sensors, from phones to GPS units to the tags in office ID badges, that capture our movements and...

Nokia vs Apple: Is a 32GB iPhone 3G on tap for January?

The launch of Nokia's flagship, touchscreen and QWERTY N97 has already sparked the inevitable "iPhone Killer" comparisons.  Without getting all into that, it is worth mentioning that the N97 will pack a whopping 32GB of internal memory backed by a microSD card slot officially capable of supporting another 16GB of storage when the phone ships sometime in the first half of next year. Apple's iPhone 3G currently tops out at 16GB of fixed...

Flagship: Nokia launches N97 smartphone

Nokia kicked off Nokia World 2008 early this morning in Barcelona, Spain with the launch of their new flagship mobile phone, the N97.  Due in the first half of next year, the N97 is Nokia's first N-Series device with a full QWERTY board, which is combined with a sliding, tilting resistive touchscreen and 32GB of onboard memory. Looking something like a sleeker, shinier HTC Tilt, the N97 is a GSM phone with HSPA and WiFi connectivity and...

Updates: BlackBerry Storm getting firmware updates

The horribly over-hyped, gimmicky, disappointing, bug-plagued BlackBerry Storm should soon be getting its first dose of badly-needed firmware fixes, according to Greg over at MobileCrunch, and a host of other Internet reports.  I still think the Storm would be best off slimming down and losing the silly click-screen mechanism altogether, but if you're digging the SurePress action and just waiting until the lags, crashes, and other kinks get...

Worth It?: Three die in Black Friday tragedies

Around these parts we spend a lot of time covering an industry that revolves around consumerism.  I make no bones about the fact that your interest in buying newer, faster, better, and shinier gadgetry goes a long way to making my gig here at PhoneDog possible.  Given that I think it'd be utterly hypocritical for me to write another article decrying America for its greedy, overly-materialistic ways - plenty of other writers have...

Noah Answers Your Questions - When can I have the Touch HD?

Q.Hey Noah, Love the work that you do. I was just wondering if you heard any whispers when the Touch HD will be coming to the US and if so which carrier. From the stuff I've seen I love it but if the wait is too long (say over 6 months) I'll just settle for the Touch Pro. Thanks! A. I'm amped up about the Touch HD, as well.  So far there's no word - or even whispering - about a US carrier.  I know HTC is interested in bringing...

Q. I'm looking forward to buy the Samsung Instinct and before I buy it, I want to know more about GPS, Internet, MP3 for example if GPS, does it come with the phone or they charge extra for it??, and Internet is it free?? or not, and also I want to know how the MP3 works. Noah Answers Your Questions - Can the iPhone 3G stay "new and fun"?

Q. Hey Noah, love the site.  Now if I got the Apple iPhone 3G, my Question is will it stay new and fun and not seem outdated after 2 years. I tend to get bored of phones after a little over a year.  Thank you for your time. Keep up the good work on PhoneDog! A. I think iPhone will stay new and fun because of the App Store - there are new programs available for it every day, and since many of them are free, it's an easy way to make...

I've only had a little bit of hands-on time with Omnia but it definitely looks great.  Omnia's a Windows Mobile device, so it should be somewhat similar to the HTC Touch Diamond in that you've got Windows Mobile 6 running underneath with a nicer layer of user...

Noah Answers Your Questions - T9 on the Instinct?

Q. Noah, you have very informative videos and think that you are great at your job. I have a question about Sprint's Samsung Instinct. I am fairly efficient with a QWERTY keypad, but I am so much faster on a T9 layout. Is the Samsung Instinct capable of a T9 text entry? Re: Blackberry, on a family plan?

It looks like you can use Bold to some extent without a data plan to access data services via WiFi:http://forums.cingular.co... have also successfully reported unlocking their Bolds.  But I don't know about use on AT&T with a non-BlackBerry messaging plan.  I'll look into it, but I'd suggest looking for "unofficial" answers -- often times you can do things like this with your phone without the carriers' approval (or knowledge), even though...

Re: Multi-touch Technology and its uses

BenjiI'm familiar with the examples you've posted - all REALLY great stuffAs you know, in the consumer realm it'll be monetization and not "pure innovation" that drives putting this research into practice when it comes to phones and other devices that ship with multi-touch capabilities.Apple's made multi-touch cool (or, "hot," I guess) but they've also done a really good job of integrating the technology into their software to make it a true...

Re: "Video-calling"/Videoconferencing through a smartphone

In Europe and other parts of the world, on-phone videoconferencing has been available for awhile nowIn the US it's a new and relatively unsupported feature.  AT&T has been promoting it on some of their more recent smartphones - there's a new ad for the LG Incite (Windows Mobile) that features their "Video Share" service.  Some of the other carrier phones also support it.  In the US it's far from standardized, as is the case with most...

Re: at&t phone help!

TJMIf you want the iPhone 3G minus the data plan, consider buying one, unlocking it, and using it on AT&T or T-Mobile with a non-iPhone plan.  You'll incur a bit of a risk in unlocking it (you'll void the warranty and have to be careful about software updates, basically) but you'll be able to use the device more or less as you wish.As to where to buy the phone besides ebay or craigs, I really don't know.  Sorry.Cheers,Noah

Eternity or Epix

Hey TherePersonally I'd go with Epix or Eternity.  I like Epix' form factor more than Fuze, and I found it to be a bit more responsive than Fuze - though my testing was semi-limited due to time constraints.  A lot of it may come down to form factor, though -- I tend to prefer a larger, thinner device to a smaller, thicker one.  Epix isn't as slim as BlackJack II was, but I still found it very pocketable.  Fuze, on the other...

Laggy and Ugly

Mmm, milk, honey, and beautiful people ... you're in Hawaii right?  Which island? So my personal take on WinMo is this:- You can do a ton with it.  Lots and lots of add-on software- The OS itself, however, tends to be very laggy and somewhat unstable- And the OS itself is fairly ugly and non-user-friendly ... Hence the rise of UIs running atop WM, like HTC's TouchFlo 3D and Samsung's TouchWiz- The problem with add-on UIs is: 1) THey...

you have to try them!

You really have to try them out yourself.  They're very different.  G1 is more advanced, has a MUCH better Web browser, and a full keyboard.  Behold is much smaller and lighter and is touchscreen only.  G1 is also a full smartphone that you can install new apps on - Behold is a "feature phone" which means that it's much less expandable.I had trouble with my Behold in terms of phone reception and sound quality, but I might...

SIM GSM

Yes, the Storm has a SIM card slot and comes with a Verizon SIM card.  It's a Quad-Band GSM phone as well as a CDMA phone.  The trick is that it's locked and VZW will only let you use the SIM card and GSM radio for global roaming on approved carriers. But you're right on - technically the phone should be unlockable for use on any GSM network, including TMo and AT&T here in the US.  BUT ... BlackBerry uses lots of proprietary...

nokia e series

AndreyCheck out the Nokia e71 and the forthcoming Nokia e63.  The e71 is an awesome unlocked smartphone - especially if you're willing to play around with the Symbia S60 OS.  The e63 will be cheaper when it comes out - basically the same phone but without GPS and 3G (e71 3G doesn't work on Tmo, anyway), and in a plastic body instead of metal.

For my money the differences boil down to three things:1.  Carrier services.  To me this is basically a push, as both carriers offer GPS, mobile TV, etc etc2.  Design.  Fuze retains HTC's original black design with the "faceted" back panel.  Sprint opted for a smooth back panel and a sliver on grey color scheme.  I actually prefer Sprint's design, but many HTC fans *hate* it.  Totally a personal preference...

Re: G2: More on the maybe (?) next Android phone from T-Mo and HTCG

Like I said, it's just rumor right now, but it comes from a reliable source with a good track record - esp. with T-Mobile devices. No idea what the time frame might be, except for "2009." My best guess would be sometime around CTIA in April, but that's just a guess. Still, it's very promising, right?

Better Berry: T-Mobile Updates BlackBerry Curve OS

T-Mobile smartphone users are gettin' all the love this week.  First came reports that G1s are being delivered across the land to folks who pre-ordered.  Now we get wind of an OS 4.5 upgrade for users of the T-Mobile BlackBerry Curve.  The upgrade, which is available as a free over-the-air update for owners of the T-Mobile Curve 8320, includes support for video capture, HTML Email, Email attachments, and myFaves 1.5 (mostly has to...

Re: HOT (?): Samsung Tocco Coming to T-Mobile USA?

@Buckys.Fan: The T919 is the T-Mobile USA version of the Tocco, with Quad Band GSM, T-Mobile specific 3G (AWS) frequencies, and other T-Mobile specific features/branding. @ sleepy and pdusk: Technically I'm under NDA so I can't say what I saw the other day. But this phone looks as good as anything I've seen or heard about coming to T-Mobile, yes. Whether you'd rather have this or Dream or BlackBerry may more come down to personal...

Re: HOT: T-Mobile's Best Phone Ever Coming by Year's End

It's not an HTC or BlackBerry. So far as I know, those are still on tap and coming to T-Mo -- and may well be better than this one in some people's eyes -- but I'm talking about something different, and it's the best all-around T-Mo device I've ever seen or heard of. So long as you're not a BlackBerry user, that is. As soon as I can say more I will ;-)

Re: What's the Best Phone: Dare vs Voyager vs iPhone

@John: I can't get a good 3G signal on iPhone at my house - I get a strong voice signal and a strong EDGE signal no problem. I also have WiFi at my house, so the 3G doesn't matter - I can make calls fine via 2G and use the WiFi for data. Actually, my personal phone is a first-gen iPhone so it's EDGE-only, anyway. In any event, I can make calls and use the data just fine for getting stuff done. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

Re: Business Class: Nokia Launches E66 and E71 Smartphones

@Vito: I'm on it ... fingers crossed. E71 looks pretty sweet for the business user who likes Symbian.
